Dr Sujata Gupta is Consultant Gynaecologist at Stockport NHS foundation Trust. She is a member of the Manchester’s Conference Ambassador Programme and will Chair the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy Annual Scientific Meeting in Manchester in 2023.  

 

BSGE Annual Scientific Meeting 2023

The BSGE Annual Scientific Meeting (BSGE ASM) will take place at Manchester Central 20-21 April 2023.

The British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy exists to improve standards, promote training and encourage the exchange of information in minimal access surgery techniques for women with gynaecological problems. Originally founded in 1989 by a small group of consultant gynaecologists, the society has since grown to a dynamic and active society with a membership of over a thousand consultants, trainees, specialist nurse practitioners, GPs and students. The BSGE is dedicated to promoting knowledge and understanding of the endoscopic approach to diagnosis and treatment to patients, the public and those that form healthcare policy so that the Society can make a difference to women’s health and wellbeing.

The Manchester ASM will move on from the challenges of COVID and look to the future of minimally invasive surgery. The theme of the meeting is “Bringing talent and technology together.” The Manchester organising committee is putting together an interesting and inspiring programme that includes cutting-edge lectures, masterclasses, debates, demonstrations, and some fantastic social activities.

Dr Gupta commented: “Women’s healthcare has not been high priority for many years and has suffered disproportionately during the pandemic. ASM 2023 will promote women’s health and also support female surgeons.”

“Political activist Emmeline Pankhurst was born in Manchester. She set up the women’s union, that became known as the suffragettes. In 2019, one hundred years after women were first given the vote, she was honoured with a statue in St Peter’s Square. We call on all women in gynaecology endoscopy to attend BSGE 2023 Manchester, in the city that was at the centre of female emancipation. The meeting will host a session ‘In memory of the Suffragettes’ It will explore issues affecting women surgeons. Three quarters of trainers in gynaecology are now women, so it’s an important debate.”

As an expert in the medical and surgical treatment of complex endometriosis, Dr Gupta is committed to helping women feel seen and heard in their treatment journey for chronic gynaecological issues. She has more than 15 years of experience in gynaecology, commonly performing hysterectomies and myomectomies to treat a broad range of women’s health problems. She is also a robotic surgeon and uses robotic surgery to perform more complex procedures, such as hysterectomies for women with severe endometriosis.

Dr Gupta has developed national endometriosis services and teaches robotic and keyhole surgery to other consultant gynaecologists. She is recognised by the British Menopause Society for her commitment to women’s health and has been a member of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology since 2004. With a key focus on endometriosis, menopause, gynae cancers, and painful periods, Dr Gupta’s work is centred around helping women access the right information and treatment they need to manage and even overcome their gynaecological problems.
