Manchester has won its bid to host the 14th European Sociological Association (ESA) conference.

Taking place from 20 to 23 August 2019, the bi-annual conference will bring together more than 3,000 national and international sociologists, and delegates from related disciplines, to exchange research findings and ideas on the theme of ‘Europe and Beyond: Boundaries, Barriers and Belonging’.

The ESA conference was secured following a collaborative ‘Team Manchester’ approach between Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), the University of Manchester (UoM), Manchester Central and Manchester Convention Bureau.

ESA president, professor Sue Scott, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be bringing our bi-annual conference to Manchester in 2019 – a vibrant city with so much to offer that is of both historic and contemporary interest to our delegates.

“We’re extremely pleased to be working with both of the city’s universities, Manchester Central and Manchester Convention Bureau. The venue team has already been extremely helpful and welcoming and with a building steeped in so much history, it promises to be our most interesting venue yet!”

The ESA held its 2017  and 13th European conference in Athens.

One of the largest international associations to ever choose the city, the conference will utilise 90% of Manchester Central’s event spaces as well as holding sessions and events at both partner universities.
