Prof. Dr. Abdul Salam K. Darwish

Lecturer in Civil Engineering, University of Greater Manchester

Can you start by telling us about your background and your work? What initially attracted you to Greater Manchester?

My academic career began in Aeronautical and Civil engineering and evolved into renewable energy systems and strategic management. Through this interdisciplinary approach, I have been able to bridge the gap between engineering innovation and policy implementation. I was initially drawn to the University of Greater Manchester by its vibrant academic ecosystem and its unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation. As a university with a strong international focus and a reputation for excellence in research, the University of Greater Manchester provided the ideal environment for me to further my research in sustainable infrastructure and global collaboration.

Can you tell us about the conferences that you’ve been involved with in Manchester?

During the past few years, I have had the opportunity to contribute to several high-impact conferences hosted in Manchester and other cities in the UK and worldwide, including those focused on climate resilience, smart city infrastructure, and renewable energy. The events served as a platform for bringing together leading researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. Besides facilitating knowledge exchange, these gatherings have also led to long-term partnerships and joint research efforts.

I’m thrilled to say that, following a successful bid, the World Renewable Energy Congress (WREN) 2025 will take place at the Hyatt Regency Manchester in August 2025. This globally significant event has the potential to influence global discourse around energy transition and sustainability.

It's been a pleasure to support you with the delivery of WREN 2025. What benefits do you anticipate hosting the Congress will have on your international community, the University of Greater Manchester and you personally?

Hosting WREN 2025 in Manchester is an excellent opportunity to position the University and the Greater Manchester region at the forefront of global sustainability initiatives. This conference will attract leading minds from across the globe, catalyse new international collaborations, and increase investment in clean energy research. It provides invaluable exposure and networking opportunities for our students and faculty. For me, this event represents the culmination of many years of effort to combine academic excellence with actionable global initiatives. There is no doubt that this project will be a legacy project - one that will continue to bear fruit long after the final session has ended.

You’re clearly passionate about the value of face-to-face scientific meetings. What strengths does The University of Greater Manchester have in your field, and what role do conferences play in your long-term vision?

The University of Greater Manchester is recognised worldwide for its interdisciplinary research, industry collaborations, and commitment to solving real-world problems. It offers cutting-edge facilities, thought leadership, and a diverse academic community in the fields of renewable energy and strategic management. The role of conferences is to foster innovation, accelerate collaborative research, and mentor the next generation of scholars. Ultimately, I see these gatherings as strategic instruments for global impact, aiding us in aligning regional capabilities with international sustainability goals.

What are the key factors that made Manchester the ideal location for the prestigious WREN 2025 Congress?

Greater Manchester represents the values of the WREN Congress-innovation, resilience, and global connectivity. The city's historical heritage in engineering and its leadership in climate action make it a natural host for such a prestigious event. With its excellent infrastructure, world-class academic institutions, and inclusive spirit, the city creates the ideal setting for international delegates. The regional commitment to achieving net zero and the integration of artificial intelligence into energy systems demonstrate Manchester as a living model of a sustainable city.

What support did you receive from the Manchester Convention Bureau?

The Manchester Convention Bureau proved an invaluable partner throughout the WREN 2025 Congress bid and planning. Their seamless and strategic support spanned all stages, from initial bidding and logistical planning to international outreach. Their deep understanding of Manchester's strengths and dedication to academic events were instrumental in securing the Congress. They also facilitated a crucial multi-day site inspection for Professor Ali Sayigh, Chairman of WREC, during the early bid phase. Securing a vital financial award from the Manchester Accommodation BID was also crucial in making this Manchester conference a reality. Beyond offering technical support within the Organising Committee, they significantly boosted the event's visibility within wider sustainability networks. We extend our sincere appreciation to Richard Moss for his exceptional support.

Finally, what does being an Mbassador mean to you and what advice would you give to others considering bidding for events in their own area?

Being an Mbassador is a great honour as well as a great responsibility. It’s about representing not just your institution but your region on the global stage. By facilitating global change through local leadership, I have been able to channel my expertise into something larger than myself. I would like to encourage those who are considering bidding for events not to hesitate. Bringing transformative events to your community is possible with the right vision, collaboration, and local support. Long-term benefits, such as reputation, impact, and legacy, are well worth the effort.
