As the gateway to one of Europe’s most dynamic event destinations, Marketing Manchester plays a pivotal role in attracting world-class conferences and business events to the region. We caught up with Charlie Minards-Tonge, the organisation’s new Business Events Sales Manager, to learn more about his career journey, passion for the sector, and why Manchester continues to thrive on the global stage.

Can you tell us about your career journey so far, and what bought you to Manchester Convention Bureau?

My career journey in the business events and hospitality sector has been shaped by a passion for creating exceptional event experiences and a desire to work within destinations that have a strong, evolving events landscape. I have worked within multiple hotel types including a spa hotel, a luxury boutique property, and an urban city hotel. These roles gave me a strong foundation in relationship management, event operations, and understanding the different needs of business and leisure travellers across a variety of market segments.

I then broadened my experience by joining the commercial team at the Manchester Convention Centre, where I specialised in exhibitions and the special events sector. This allowed me to develop a deep understanding of large-scale event logistics, venue sales, and the wider event ecosystem that supports major conferences and exhibitions.

What brought me to Manchester Convention Bureau was the opportunity to combine all this experience in a role that champions the city as a leading global destination for business events. Manchester’s growth, international reputation, and the bureau’s collaborative approach really aligned with both my professional background and my personal passion for promoting the region. It felt like a natural next step, bringing together my hotel experience, my venue and exhibition knowledge, and my commitment to helping attract and support world‑class events for the city.

What first sparked your interest in business events?

My interest in business events began when I realised how powerful they are for a city’s economy. Seeing how conferences and exhibitions drive revenue for local hotels, venues, restaurants, and suppliers really inspired me. I was also drawn to the collaborative nature of the sector, the chance to work closely with city partners and collectively showcase what a destination has to offer. The combination of real economic impact and strong partnership working is what first sparked my passion for business events.

What makes Manchester such a strong destination for business events?

Manchester is a strong business events destination because it blends world‑class connectivity with the warmth and hospitality the city is known for. Its venues, hotels, and infrastructure make it easy for delegates to access and navigate, but it’s the people who truly set Manchester apart, that friendly, northern charm that creates a welcoming atmosphere for every visitor. This mix of professionalism, personality, and pride in the city makes Manchester an outstanding choice for business events.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

I’m most looking forward to the opportunity to champion Manchester on both a national and international stage, showcasing everything the city has to offer as a world‑class destination for business events. Being able to actively promote Manchester’s strengths, its vibrant personality, and its exceptional venues to new audiences is incredibly exciting, and I’m eager to play a part in attracting events that bring real economic and cultural value to the city.

Do you have a favourite hidden gem in Manchester you’d recommend to visitors?

My favourite hidden gem in Manchester has to be Schofields Bar. The site used to be The Old Grapes, a pub once owned by actress Liz Dawn from Coronation Street, which was a well‑known haunt for local celebrities.

How would you describe Manchester in three words?

Welcoming. Resilient. Proud.
